The definition from Webster's Dictionary that most clearly reflects what Christians mean when they use the word "cult"? is: "A religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also: its body of adherents."

Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) may appear to hold many of the same beliefs that Christians do. However, when you take a closer look, you'll see that Jehovah's Witnesses deny most of the key doctrines of Christianity, including: the Trinity, the personality of the Holy Spirit, and the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. The most important issue is that they do not believe that Jesus Christ is also God. For this reason, we consider them to be a cult, not just another denomination.

Perhaps, one reason for the increase in these cults is that the second millennium has just finished. Historians tell us that when each century turns and, especially when each millennium turns, there are movements of people who try to deal with the change by spiritual means. However, their means are not through true Christianity.

It's very cool that you are interested in reading the Bible! You mentioned that since your parents are not religious, the only Bible you have had access to is one from your great-grandmother, who was a Jehovah's Witness. That Bible is probably meaningful to you because it was hers, and since it is the only Bible in your house, it is understandable why you have been reading it. However, we're encouraged that you're taking a closer look at what you're actually reading.

Perhaps the greatest similarities between Mormons and Christians is that they tend to be good neighbors and promote family values. However, the theological differences between the two groups are many.
